I hate that feeling. I have been extremely busy this past week. I left TCU last Friday and since then I have unpacking, organizing, and job searching. I am happy to say that all three of those were successfully completed.

Now, onto baseball. Unfortunately, the guy who usually does the write ups on the Hawks' games has been inactive since mid-April so I don't have any full game writes for you. I do have the box score from Kameron's last start, though: 5/4 Start

I can tell from the box score things didn't go too well but, if we all keep thinking positive, I know great things will come from Kameron and the whole Softbank Team.

A neat thing I found while I was surfing the Softbank site was that they list all of the songs they use during a game. From a certain players walk-on song to the victory tune that is played after a win, it's all listed on the site. I know a lot of people (including me) that have heard songs at ball games and can never find the song title or artist. That's just one of my random findings on the Hawks' website.

Once again, if you're on Twitter, my ID is rain_holly. If you follow me, send me an @reply so I know you read my blog. Also, for the Facebookers out there, there is a Softbank Hawks fan page. Just put "Softbank Hawks" in the search bar and it should come up. Join the group and show your love for the Hawks!

Have a good night - or day if you're in Japan :)

-Holly

P.S. Usually, the team has off on Mondays so I was expecting him to start tomorrow.

As usual, the Hawks are the visitors when Kameron starts. Next week though, he should get his first at the Yahoo! Dome. That should be really exciting!!

I might actually try to stay up and watch his start tonight because I don't have a class or a final tomorrow to wake up for! I also have an Economics paper I really, really need to finish, lots of studying to do and I just promised my roommate I would pull and all-nighter with her (oh the joys of college, right?). If I do stay up, I will take screen shots or something for those of you who can't stay up.

Speaking of finals, this week is finals week at TCU, which not only means lots of studying, but it also means that it will be my last week in DFW until August. I'm so sad. My Dad already came on Saturday to take most of my stuff back to Austin. My side of the room is bare as it is missing all of my baseball decor.

Next Start:
Hawks (V) v.s. I'm pretty sure I was wrong. For some reason, I saw Tokyo Dome and instantly thought Yahoo! Dome. Woops. So actually, Kameron didn't start at home last time either. That means his first three starts have all come on visiting turf. Not cool. Even his next start looks to be scheduled for away. In fact, if the rotation and everything stays the same, he won't get to pitch for the home town crowd until May 12th. Of course, he pitches on Tuesdays too, which means if you want to watch him pitch, you have to get up early on a weekday. Very frustrating...

In other news, if you are interest in reading actual write ups about the Hawks' games, you can go here. To make it easy, the following are the links to the games Kameron has pitched in:

1st Start - Hawks v.s. I was getting a little bored with the old layout and decided it was time for a new one.

2) In Kameron's first official start for the Hawks, he went 6 1/3 innings allowing six runs. Four of those runs were earned. He gave up six hits while striking out two and walking four. The Hawks lost 6-0. Click here for the complete box score.

3) I had thought that Kameron's next start would be on Sunday afternoon. If this would have been true, we would have been able to watch the game Saturday night at 11:00pm CST. Unfortunately, it appears as if there is a six-person rotation for the Hawks, moving his next possible start to Tuesday. This means that if you want to watch the game, you will have to watch it at 4:00am CST Tuesday.

4) I don't like the idea of a six-person rotation because, with the schedule the way it is (with Mondays off) Kameron will continue to pitch on a Tuesday.

5) OT: I went to the Ranger's home opener on Monday. I got an epic sunburn. I was as red as their new red uniforms.

6) OT: On Wednesday I went to the Waste Water Treatment Plant for my Environmental Science class. It was...interesting. We had to wear hard hats but, we didn't ever walk underneath anything. I can't quite figure that one out.

7) The Hawks are playing the Nippon Ham Fighters for their current series. Former Ranger Jason Botts plays for the Fighters.

8) The atmosphere of a Japanese baseball game is incredibly different than any MLB game I have ever seen. While I was watching the Hawks' game the other night, I was amazed by the fans. There was rarely any moment that they were quiet.

9) Before I changed the layout, I noticed that the blog had reach over 1,000 hits. That is incredible. The ticker disappeared once I changed the layout.

10) Finally, I send my condolences to the family, friends and fans of Angel's pitcher Nick Adenhart.

-Holly

"Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday's success or put its failures behind and start over again. That's the way life is, with a new game every day, and that's the way baseball is.”
-Bob Feller

If You're Up Again...

I thought that I would just let everyone know that I just watched Kameron pitch one perfect inning for Softbank. Last night, while messing around on the computer, I successfully found a live broadcast of the Softbank game. Tonight, using the same software, I am currently watching the Hawks battle the Orix Buffaloes....it's 0-0 in the top of the 5th.

What is this magical FREE software you ask? It's called TvAnts. All you have to do, is download and watch. While everything is almost everything is in Japanese (the scoreboard on the screen is simple enough to follow), I find it fascinating to listen to the crowd. Drums, whistles, chanting, they are never quiet.

The program quality is pretty good. The screen that loads is a little small but, you can maximize it if you want. The only thing is that the larger screen is a little grainy. A few times it will freeze but, it usually fixes itself pretty quickly. Really though, no complaints considering the feed is coming all the way from Japan.

On perk is that TvAnts just isn't Japanese TV shows. It has numerous Chinese and Korean channels, as well as lots of American channels. I watched the MLB network for a while on it earlier.

Here are the instruction after you have downloaded the software:

-Open up TvAnts and allow for the Channels to load on the screen.

-Once they have loaded, scroll down to where the non-english Characters begin.

-Look for NPB: Fukuoka... in the title.

-Double Click and let it buffer.

-Sit back, and enjoy the game.

*If you can't locate the feed the way described above, just type "NPB" in the search box at the top of the screen and it should come up then. Be sure it has "Fukuoka" in the title so that you load the right game.

-Holly

P.S. I pre-apoligize for spelling/grammatical errors. It's 12:40am and I just got back from a full day at Six Flags. Soooo tired.

Video

I'm going to be headed to Austin today to go to the Rodeo this weekend. He went five innings allowing three runs off of six hits. He walked none, struck out two, and earned a no-decision. He finished the game with an ERA of 2.77.

Today, Kameron made his third start against the Hanshin Tigers and earned his first win as Hawk. In the 5-3 victory, Kameron went six innings allowing three runs off of five hits. He walked two and struck out three. The Hawks were really helped out by two errors made by Tiger fielders that led to two Hawk runs. American Brian Falkenborg sealed the deal by stopping Tiger batters one last time to earn himself a save and Kameron a win.

Kameron is now 1-0 in pre-season play with an ERA of 3.32.

-Holly

"Baseball is a harbor, a seclusion from failure that really matters, a playful utopia in which virtuosity can be savored to the third decimal place of a batting average. If the rotation used for the pre-season games is similar to the regular season rotation, we can expect to see Kameron as the second or third starter. For the most part, Kameron has pitched after fellow American D.J. Houlton this pre-season.

On the same day, Kameron started and went five innings in a 1-1 tie against the Yokohama Baystars. In his five innings of work, Kameron allowed just two hits, struck out three, walked three and allowed just one run. This was his second outing in the 'official' pre-season and just his first start. His two appearances together total for eight innings with an ERA of 1.13.

I believe we can expect to see Kameron's next outing on either Wednesday the 18th against the Chiba Lotte Marines or Friday the 20th against the Dragons.

For those of you that are curious about other former Rangers in Japan, Kevin Mench and the Hanshin Tigers will be at the Yahoo! Dome a week from Tuesday on the 24th of March for a three game series against the Hawks. As for Jason Botts and the Nippon Ham Fighters, they too will travel to the Yahoo! Dome for a three game series beginning on April 10th.

Yeah for Spring Break!

-Holly

"Never let the fear of striking out get in your way."
- Babe Ruth

Hawks now 4-3 in Pre-Season Play

The Hawks have continued their pre-season play, now 4-3 after seven games. On Thursday (3/5), Kameron pitched a near flawless three innings in a 2-1 win over the Rakuten Eagles. He came in the 4th inning after fellow American starter D.J. Halton. Halton went three innings, giving up the only Eagle run, a home run, in the top of the second. In Kameron's three innings of work he allowed no runs, one hit, no walks and fanned five. He needed 37 pitches to get past ten batters.

More fun with the Google translator: It took me a while to realize Kameron had even pitched in this game because Google translator translated his name to "Russia". No comment.

Sorry this is rather short and sloppy. It's the week before spring break here at TCU which translates to "lots-o-tests" week. Enough said.

-Holly

“I hate tests”
-Many a college students, including me.

Hawks Take Two Against The Carp

The Softbank Hawks won both games of a two game series against the Hiroshima Carp to begin Spring Training play over the weekend.

On Saturday, Hawk pitching had a strong outing against Carp hitters by allowing just five hits and no runs as the Hawks went on to beat the Carp 3-0.

In the second game, on Sunday, the Hawk offense took over as they lit-up Carp pitchers with 11 hits over eight innings to beat the Carp 7-2.

The Softbank Hawks will look to better their spring training record to (3-0) on Wednesday, the fourth, against the Rakuten Eagles at the Fukuoka Yahoo! Google translator has finally failed on me; not that it was exactly sufficient beforehand either. All I can really say is this: He pitched in his first intersquad game yesterday (the 22nd). As for the exact details, I'm not too sure. It's like someone wrote out a sentence on a piece of paper, cut out each individual word, put them all in a glass and started drawing out words to reform the sentence again. I will take a guess, though. I'm going to guess three hits and two runs.

You take a look and tell me what you think:

Pitcher Justin foreigner Jamano New (26 = San Diego Padres) low pitcher Cameron (27 = Rangers) 2 showed a pitching mound in the first intrasquad game. Jamano pitcher hits and no runs three times a pitcher hit a low two runs twice. Pitcher Jamano "The breaking ball is a different day. Today's game was so good curve ball." Low pitcher is "a good pitch for a strike at all" good mouth feel. Akiyama Director "(the struggle for Rothe's) come in full. Have found something good," wrote the future.

The Bold part is what I think might be referring to the game. Your guess is as good as mine...unless you can read Japanese or the Gibberish above.

In better news, I found a picture!!

I'm sure I just made every one's Monday a little better. Don't worry; it's me, not Kameron. I feel like I'm too young to be getting this sort of thing, but Carpal Tunnel is what the TCU doc's think. The worst thing is, is that I'm pretty sure I didn't even get it from writing twenty-page essays; I'm almost certain I got it from playing this Internet game. You see, my wireless mouse broke so, for about three weeks I used the touch-pad on my laptop. Included in that three week period was my obsession with that game. Unfortunately for me, the extremely quick hand movement required to beat the game was quite harsh on my hand using the touch-pad. And eventually, I got to where I am now: In a lot of pain.

For the sake of my hand and wrist, I will get to the point. This weekend I am going to Austin to go to the Doctor where, I assume, they will tell me to minimize computer use. So, until my poor wrist feels better, I won't be posting too much here. Don't worry though, if there is any relevant news, I will do my best to get it posted, even if I have to type with my chin.

With my spare time, I'm thinking about finding some other people who have been hurt by playing that "Airport Mania" game and filing a Class Action Lawsuit. That would be awesome because then we could represented by one of those T.V. attorneys I see in commercials during The Price is Right. While the players talk in English, there is a loud Japanese translation played over them. With that said, the video is still pretty neat to watch. Judging from the reaction of Japanese journalists during the photo op at the end, they seem pretty amused by the three Americans.

-Holly

"I've come to the conclusion that the two most important things in life are good friends and a good bullpen."
-Bob Lemon

Three Foreign Pitchers to Join the Team Today and Spring Training Assignments Released

The three new American Pitchers acquired over the off season will join the rest of the Softbank team today. I managed to receive three questions and will answer them now.

Q) As a TCU horned frog, have you ever seen a horned frog? I haven't seen one since I was a kid when my dad was stationed in Texas around 1967 or so. He was in the Air Force and getting his masters degree at Texas A&M. My bothers and I use to catch them all the time. Is the Texas Horned Frog dwindling in numbers and becoming harder and harder to find?
-Craig

A) I see horned frogs all the time, if you count the numerous statues and images around campus! Haha, but really though, I have only seen a real-life horned frog a few times at zoos. Unfortunately, I hear the horned frog population is slowly dwindling down. Right now, I believe they are even on the endangered species list.

Q) Tell them about Wilson.
-Amanda (My best friend)

A) Well that's not really a question. But, because I'm in such a good mood, I'll Answer...uh...tell y'all about Wilson. Wilson is my dearly beloved...glove! Wilson is always by my side through thick and thin, though he doesn't get to play catch all too often these days anymore. I first got him for Christmas around my 7th or 8th grade year and has been with me ever since. He even stuck with me after I left him out on the field overnight my sophomore year in high school. It rained pretty hard that night too. And of course, Wilson hadn't been oiled in quite a while. I was lucky he survived. Though my Wilson isn't a fancy color like C.J. Wilson's blue Wilson and his leather is a little 'soggier' than when I first got him, Wilson is still my best glove.

Q) Who is your favorite Ranger player now?

-Dani and Micah

A) Ya' know, I'm not too sure about this one. I think I will just wait awhile, at least until after spring training to discuss any "favorites".

Well everyone, we have just turned the last corner of the off season and are now headed towards the finish line; Spring training is in the very near future. Until then, I will be merrily sitting at my desk, eating "naturally and [mostly] artificially flavored" Gummy Bears, enjoying a nice room tempurature Gatorade and not enjoying homework. Oh, and a little blogging too.

-Holly

"The trouble with baseball is that it is not played the year round.”

-Gaylord Perry

A Statistics Lesson

I am always the first one at school to throw out the "I will never use this outside of school" complaint to teachers. Math class was always the first class I criticized because it didn't take me but two seconds of Algebra my freshman year to realize that math was not my expertise. Some of my arguments were as followed:

Algebra I: "When will I ever have to solve for 'x' as a History major?" (I had considered majoring in History...that is until I heard the words "History Paper")

Geometry: "Do veterinarians really need to have the formula for the area of an octagon memorized?" (I wanted to be a vet...then I watch an episode of emergency vets and nearly got sick)

Algebra II: "Factorization? I'm pretty sure music majors don't need to know the factors of 71. What? It's a prime number? See!" (Of course I went through the whole music major phase...that is until the dreaded music theory class I took my senior year.)

Pre-Calculus: "I'm sorry, but I'm pretty sure journalists don't need to know how to find the missing side of a triangle by using Sin, Co sin or Tangent." (I'm happy to say the whole journalism thing is still accurate.)

I would have put down my argument for my recent statistics class, but I didn't have too. I actually used something I learned from that class in a real-life problem. Yeah!

So, what did I do? I found out the Mean (average) height of all the players on the Softbank Roster (as of 1/22/2008), found the Standard Deviation of the data and used it see exactly where the heights of the American Players fit with the rest of the squad.

The mean height of all 74 players on the roster:

181.6cm or approximately 6 feet.

The Standard Deviation for all 74 players on the roster:

5.5 cm or approximately 2 inches.

Without going into too much detail, Standard Deviation is the measure of the dispersion the data set is from the mean. Basically, it tells you how far a particular number is from 'normal' in a data set. Doctors often use it to track the heights of children to make sure they grow at a normal rate. Most data (99.7%) falls within three standard deviation of the mean. If a particular number is not within three standard deviations, it is usually labeled an outlier. A scientist running an experiment with an outlier may suspect an error or a child's height that is considered an outlier can alert a doctor of a disorder.

On the chart above, the center dash in the mean. The rest of the marks are the +/- Standard deviations up to three. As you can see, the third + standard deviation is 198.1cm. Kameron Loe's height is 201cm. This means that Kameron's height is outside of the third standard deviation, thus putting him in the .3% of data that lies outside the third. Luckily though, he is not alone. His fellow American teammate Brian Falkenborg is listed as 200cm., which also puts him past the third standard deviation. The rest of the Americans' heights fall within the third standard deviation.

Basically, I just proved mathematically that Kameron will be a lot taller than his teammates. Haha. Hey, it was a good way to pass the time. This long off season continues...but not for too long!

-Holly

"Baseball is a habit. The slowly rising crescendo of each game, the rhythm of the long season-These are the essentials and they are remarkably unchanged over nearly a century and a half. Of how many American institutions can that be said?"

-George Will

Back in Business

Now that the Holiday season has passed and 2009 has replaced 2008, it is time to get back to business. Over the Holidays, there was not much news on the Softbank site however, they did announce the Jersey Numbers of their Foreign Players:

Chris Aguila - Outfielder - 04

Kameron Loe - Pitcher - 00

Brian Falkenborg - Pitcher - 25

Justin Germano - Pitcher - 34

D.J. Houlton - Pitcher - 54 (Previously 00)

All of the Players are new and were acquired during the off season except for D.J. Houlton who is the foreign player returning from last season.

The Hawks also have the profiles of the new players up. Click here to see Kameron's profile. Obviously, there is not a picture yet. I expect that to appear sometime in late January. At the bottom there is, what I believe to be, a career achievements list, however, I wouldn't even suggest trying to read/understand it. It's not impossible to get some of it, it's just <s>a little</s> very mind boggling. Plus, it says the same thing for every pitcher.

I will now leave you with an interesting bunch of statistics (Wow! I am actually finding use to something I've learned....)

Heights of 10 randomly* selected players from the Softbank Hawk's Roster (In CM):

189, 174, 180, 189, 179, 201, 178, 178, 179, 193

*Except for one...I have a feeling you will know which one it is after one glance at the numbers. Haha! When I get back to Ft. Worth I will go through an actual random selection of heights and put them through a little test I learned in Statistics. What I find should show us just how "far out" Kameron's height will be from the rest of the team. Too bad I didn't think about this sometime last semester; I could have got some extra credit...

Wow. Kameron should be really, really proud of himself: He has me reading for fun and doing math in my spare time.

-Holly

"Baseball is the only game left for people. To play basketball, you have to be 7 feet 6 inches. To play football, you have to be the same width."
-Bill Veeck

Happy New Year!

Hey Y'all,

Just here to wish everyone a Happy New Year! No news, no events, just nothing. Actually, I take that back. If you are planning on or are wanting to move to Japan and need a job, the Hawks are looking for an announcer (MC). You must be 18 years old and able to commute using public transportation. Also, you must be very photogenic as you will be on T.V., in ads and magazines. This factor will be checked via the full-body photo and numerous head shots you have to send in, along with your resume and completed application. Oh! I almost forgot, you must have the ability to speak and understand Japanese fluently...shall I move on?

I have a feeling not too many of y'all were even interested in that job in the first place. Oh Well...

Since I had nothing to write about, I decided that I had two options: to write about my first semester finals (I owned my Statistics test today!!) or to answer any questions anyone might have. After considering writing about my finals, I realized that I would probably

1) Bore people to death
2) Bring back terrible memories for those who have previously experienced the all night studying and wrinkle producing stress caused by finals.

I simply decided that it was in my and your best interest to open up the floor to questions.

Ask whatever you want. Just make sure it's civil, useful and not impossible to answer. To make it fun, it doesn't even have to be baseball related. If it is baseball related, it doesn't even have to be Japanese baseball related.

Here is an example:

Q: What is it like falling backwards in a chair?
A: What a fabulous question! It is rather embarrassing and painful, however, it also serves as a great conversation starter :)

One last thing, don't be question shy! I have already learned of two sites that stream lots of the games online:

The First one is MyP2P. This site has broadcasts that allow most platforms, but sometimes the streams will only work on Windows though. However, the site JustIn.tv works off flash which welcomes all platforms. It even streams with very little to no delay. These sites were suggested during last season so I hope that they still work this season.

-Holly

"Baseball isn't a business, it's more like a disease."
-Walter F. I was about 30 or so minutes away when Craig called me to tell me Kameron had already left the office. Yet again, my luck didn't exactly work out. Oh well. As I told Craig, I have become pretty immune to my bad luck getting the best of me. I am happy to report though, that I got to meet Angel! At first I was a little afraid. After a while though, I got used to her and was a little more comfortable around her. I must admit, she was pretty cool.

I got to visit a while with Craig about some news on Kameron. I was very happy to learn what Kameron's new jersey number will be. He had a choice of several different numbers - one being 43 - but he decided to go with...Double Zero!! Thats right, 00. One of the biggest guys in the NPB will be wearing the smallest number. That is quite an unique choice.

As for now, I think Kameron is just getting ready to move out to Japan and getting ready for spring training to work on that "wa". I was reading a review of the book "You Gotta Have Wa" and it said that "Wa" can be translated as “experience of calmness or reflection”, or “a spirit of tranquility and peace". When it comes down to it, finding your own personal "wa" is like finding yourself in Japanese culture. It is an assimilation into Japanese culture for foreign players. The team takes the whole "wa" thing so serious that no wives or girlfriends are allowed during spring training. Now that is intense. If you want to read the book reivew you can click here. "You Gotta Have Wa" sounds like a pretty interesting book that can be useful in understanding Japanese baseball. I might even pick it up over my Christmas break. It can be found on Amazon for $0.01 and $3.99 shipping and handling.

All I have to say now is that Kameron should be proud of himself; he has me reading books for fun. Haha!

-Holly

P.S. I had a great time meeting everyone from the Snake Pit! I really have to thank them a lot for all the help I've recieved on this blog and for letting me meet the beautiful Angel!

"Baseball players are smarter than football players. Well, two days ago I managed to injure myself a little, however, it wasn't in the most noble way. I was sitting on my chair at my desk. The Chairs we have look like regular chairs but they are actually rocking chairs. So, I was sitting in my chair and I turned in my chair to face my roommate to talk to her. I propped my elbow up on the back of the chair and started talking with her. I started to rock back and forth and I guess I rocked a little too far back because before I knew it, the chair and I were heading towards the ground. I landed right on my elbow. Ouch! I immediately started laughing because my roommate did the same thing a few weeks ago. We joked all night about how hurt ourselves in the most ridiculous ways. Incase you are wondering, I didn’t hurt myself too bad, I’ve got bad carpet burn and a little soreness.

As for news from across the Pacific, there really isn’t anything. I guess this time of year, in between Thanksgiving and Christmas, is pretty quiet for the NPB. But don’t worry, if anything pops up I will certainly post it ASAP because it’s almost winter break which means I will have no tests, no homework, no reading and certainly no studying for the next few weeks! I cannot believe my first semester is practically over. It feels like it was just yesterday when I first moved in. Isn’t just amazing how fast time goes by?

In other news, I have decided to stay in DFW an extra night so I can go to the Toys for Tots event at the Ballpark tomorrow. Not only will it be lots of fun but, all of the Toys collected will mean a happier Christmas for lots of Children around DFW. If you are in the area and have nothing to do, you should definitely check it out!

-Holly

"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. Dome is getting a new artificial turf. It sounds like the old turf was getting pretty old and was taking a toll on the players' feet. So, instead of doing extensive ground work and risking 'foot' injury the Softbank Hawk officials went ahead and decided to to put new turf in. According to the release, the turf will play the ball just like real grass and will even help with shock absorption when the foot hits it resulting in the player's footing being more secure. Hopefully that will equal less sprained ankles. The turf will be packed with little pieces of rubber for more cushion. I guess they figured their fans would be so into the new turf they even posted the little diagram above on the site. Or, they figured some random person could use it in their blog as colorful image to enhance a post about Artificial turf. Either one works!

This stuff sounds exactly like the stuff at my High School. They put it in the summer before my Sophomore year and sold the whole thing idea it would reduce injuries. Now, you will have to ask a football coach or player if it really did help with injuries but, from a marching band member's point of view, that stuff was horrible. Luckily, the Yahoo! Dome is indoors because being on that turf in direct sunlight raised the temperature at least ten degrees. I remember Friday afternoon practices before the football game were the worst; especially in August. I would rather have practiced on our usual black pavement than that stuff any day of the week. As for the little rubber pieces...haha! I hope all of the Softbank players are willing to track the rubber beads everywhere they go. After practices on the field I can remember how we would dump our shoes out on the white tile floor in the dressing room to see just how much we had collected. Today, I can lift the soles of my performance shoes and still dump out some of those little rubber pieces and I haven't been on that field, in those shoes in over a year!

That's enough ranting about artificial turf. The idea of this post sounded a lot more fun before I started; now it just sounds like I am bored. The sad part is there may be some truth to that...

-Holly

P.S. My Hawks didn't fair to well against Kerrville Tivy on Saturday. They lost, ending their longest playoff birth at the Regional Championship game. Not too bad for a fifth year team!! Instead of signing off with my usual baseball quote, I am going to quote the last line from my High School's School Song in honor of the football team's great success in playoffs! Go Hawks!!

"Hendrickson, we proclaim devotion to you!"
-Cynthia Bradley
-Writer of the School Song and the best teacher I ever had in High School

Fun with the Currency Converter and other random things....

Well I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that I don't have any new news on Kam Loe but, the good news is that I have some sort of baseball news (there are too many news' in that sentence haha). I'm sure many of you know of Jason Botts who, last year, left the Rangers' Organization mid-season and signed a contract with the Nippon Ham Fighters of the NPB. Yesterday, the Fighters re-signed Botts to a one year deal worth 47 Million Yen. That is roughly just over $506,000 or

615,488 Swiss Francs

14,184,631 Russian Rubles

751,511,869 Korean Wons

116,387,637 Iceland Kronas

Off topic but, one thing I can't stand is Football (eh...not just football) players with hair hanging out the back of their helmet. One, it makes them look like girls and two, it gets very distracting when the hair is flailing all over the place when the player is running. With that said, I laughed quite hard when I saw this article and video.

Next week I only have three days of school, then dead days! I'm not sure but, I may go to the Toys for Tots toy drive at the Ballpark Thursday. I would like to go however, I would also really like to go home too. It's such a hard decision!

Before I go, I want to wish my Alma Mater's football team the very best of luck in their Regional Final Tomorrow! What makes this playoff experience so amazing for my old school, Hendrickson High School, is that this school year is only its sixth year open. My graduating class was only the third class and just the second to go the full four years at the School. The varsity football program is even younger than the school; the first year they only had a JV and freshman team, making it only five-years-old. As a six-year-old school, the Hendrickson football team is holding their own against older and more experienced programs. Go Hawks! We Believe!!

-Holly

"Love is the most important thing in the world, but baseball is pretty good too. Yesss! Although, I stayed up until three or four this morning doing an essay and spent two hours in the library today finishing it up. Needless to say, it has been a long day. However, to celebrate my homeworkless night I decided to post some fun facts about the Softbank Hawks!

Note: I'm not too sure how 'fun' these facts will be...I guess I should call them inFormative Facts but, alliterations are just too much fun to not use!!

1. Their colors are Black and Gold.

2. Their Mascot's name is Harry and he is a Hawk.

3. The team's name in Japanese is 福岡ソフトバンクホークス. For those of us that can't pronounce that, it is pronounced Fukuoka Sofutobanku Hōkusu.

4. The Softbank company is a leading cellphone service provider in Japan.

5. Kenji Johjima, a catcher for the Seattle Mariners was originally drafted by the Softbank Hawks in 1999.

6. Remember that weird balloon thing I talked about in an earlier post? Well here is a video of it on Youtube. It's pretty crazy. Just be sure to have your volume down if you're at work, school or in public; people may think you are listening to some sort of cult-esque chant.

7. Speaking of Youtube, there are a ton (not a ton...but for such a random topic there is a lot) of videos on there of some of the players singing Karaoke. To link a couple of them, there this one and this one, my personal favorite, which is a little bit of variety. Plus it ends with my favorite song ever. I think they are having a little too much fun...haha!

8. The Hawks just got a new Manager: Koji Akiyama.

9. The Hawks play in the Fukuoka Yahoo! Dome. It is associated with Yahoo! because Yahoo! Japan is one of the subsidiaries of the Softbank corporation.

10. Japan is 13 hours ahead of America.

I will have to admit, the last factoid is a little lame. I couldn't think of anything else to put, my lack of sleep is making me brain dead!! Now, I am off to bed. I need to start going to sleep at decent hours of the night and not the next morning. Honestly, since college started I don't think my roommate and I have gone to bed before midnight, bleh. Plus, finals will start in two weeks. Luckily, we have 'dead days' the Thursday and Friday before finals start. I wish they wouldn't call them dead days; it sounds so gruesome. Well, I hope you have enjoyed the fantastically ferocious fun facts (I love alliterations!!).

-Holly

P.S. I want to give a shout out to Craig and Erin from the Snake Pit for the great comments and the little shout they gave my blog on their blog Kam's Snake Pit. These links have already been added under the blogs menu on the right! Also, I want to give a shout out to Micah, who writes the awesome blog Baseball is My Boyfriend, who helped spread the word about Keepin' up with Kam and is another awesome Kam Loe fan! Wooo! Now, off to sing "I'm a Barbie Girl" obnoxiously loud with my roomie instead of sleeping :)

"A hot dog at the ballgame beats roast beef at the Ritz."

-Humphrey Bogart

It's Official!

So yesterday I checked the Softbank website and found that they had finally released a statement stating that they had agreed to a contract with Kam Loe. Woo! As much as I would have liked to have posted that news when I saw it, I couldn't because I was just about to leave to go to San Antonio for the day with my brother. For those in Texas, we all know that it's playoff time for High School football. My Brother and I went to check out two playoff games at the Alamodome. The first between Gregory-Portland and Killeen (my brother lives in Portland so he wanted to watch them play) and the second game between my Alma Mater Hendrickson High School and Port Lavaca Calhoun. Unfortunately, GP didn't fair so well but I am happy to report that HHS won 31-30 and are advancing to the next round! Go Hawks!

So, Kameron Loe did agree to a contract with the Softbank Hawks. Kam agreed to the contract around the same time as another Right Handed Pitcher Justin Germano. Germano came to the Hawks from The San Diego Padres with a 5.27 ERA and a record of 8-16 over four years of service in the MLB.

FUKUOKA, Nov. 28 (20:32) Kyodo

The Softbank Hawks have agreed to the signing of major league right-handers Kameron Loe and Justin Germano, the team said Friday.

Loe's deal is worth 190 million yen over two years, while Germano will ink
a one-year deal for 50 million yen, team sources said.

The 27-year-old Loe has a 19-23 career record with a save and a 4.77 ERA in five major league seasons -- all with the Texas Rangers. He was 1-0 with a 3.23 ERA in 14 relief appearances this past season.

Germano went 0-3 with a 5.98 ERA in 12 games with the San Diego Padres in
2008. He is 8-16 with a 5.27 ERA over four years in the majors. Both players
are expected to join the team's starting rotation.

What really excites me is the last sentence of that release. Kameron will be given a chance at the starting rotation which I know is what he really wants to do! Remember, if you ever want to check out the Softbank Hawks official website, just look on the right column under links! It even already in Google Translator!! Just keep in mind that not everything on the page translates and that some words don't have a direct translation in English. Oh well, I think we can live through it.

-Holly

P.S. I know this post changes texts right in the middle of it. My little text choice button has seemed to have disappeared right before my eyes. A little weird but I think it has to do with the fact I put that block quote in and I don't know how to take it off. If you know how to work the block quote button, please, please, please feel free to tell me! Hahaha...Please!

EDIT: (A few moments after publishing) Okay so in my published post, the text fixed itself. I have no idea how it did that but it did. Plus, my text button is back. I have no idea what I am doing.

"The other sports are just sports. Wednesday, I had my wisdom teeth pulled. I actually got to go completely under for the ordeal but in the end, I was in a whole lot of pain! The first few hours were okay but, once the numbness in my mouth left I just about died in pain. Luckily though, the Doc prescribed me Vicodin. Vicodin is now my new temporary best friend. Apparently, after my procedure while I was in 'recovery', I was laughing uncontrollably and stating that I had had fun and wanted to 'to do it again!' There is nothing as funny as someone on sedatives, even if it is yourself.

Well, Thanksgiving came and went. I was only able to each cranberries (which I love!!) and mashed potatoes covered in gravy. After supper, I found that desserts were much easier to eat. Especially the homemade sweet potato pie my dad made. At least I didn't have the chance to stuff my face this year; that is never good.

That's enough about my teeth and eating troubles. In baseball news, on Wednesday the Rangers put Kameron Loe on Unconditional Release Waivers. And of course, we all know that he will eventually sign with the Softbank Hawks.

TOKYO, Nov. 27 (18:40) Kyodo

The Texas Rangers said Wednesday they have placed right-hander Kameron Loe on unconditional release waivers and expect him to sign with the Softbank Hawks.

''The club has placed Loe on irrevocable waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release. Loe is expected to sign with the Softbank Hawks of the Japanese Pacific League,'' the Rangers said in a press release.

His deal is worth $2 million over two years, according to U.S. media outlets. The 27-year-old Loe has a 19-23 career record with a save and a 4.77 ERA in five major league seasons -- all with the Rangers. He was 1-0 with a 3.23 ERA in 14 relief appearances this past season.

Loe is known to occasionally bring his 2-meter-long pet snake, named Angel, to ballparks.

Obviously, because Kam hasn't signed a contract yet is the reason why the Hawks haven't even recognized him yet on their website. I've got a feeling that Kam is going to be a really popular player in Japan.

Anyways, onto some weird stuff. I have found that the Japanese are obsessed with knowing blood type. I asked my roommate about this (she is into Japanese Culture ect.) and she said that knowing someones blood type in Japan is like knowing someones eye or hair color here. If you go to the website for the Softbank Hawks and look at the roster, some players do have their blood types recorded. However, I really noticed this when I was looking at the "cheerleader" page. All of the girls have little bios and on them is their blood type. Weird...

When searching for pictures, I have noticed that lots of the pictures include fans holding yellow balloons. At first, I thought this was some type of very popular souvenir that everyone bought until I was doing a little research. The balloons are actually used as a little 'ritual' during the seventh inning. At the beginning of the seventh, almost all of the fans will pull out a couple of yellow balloons similar those used to make balloon animals. Some people write the names of their favorite players on them. Then, they will blow them up and wave them around during the inning. Finally, when the inning is over the all release the balloons free to fly around the stadium. Yeah pretty freaky.

-Holly

"Baseball is reassuring. It makes me feel as if the world is not going to blow up."

-Sharon Olds

-This Sporting Life

Workin' hard at hardly workin'

What does one do when they are stuck for four hours calling Alumni and Friends of TCU with a double monitor system? Post another Blog! Yeah! I can sense the excitement! Anyways, so while I'm here at work with nothing to do I figured I could go ahead and introduce myself a little.

I'm Holly and I am currently a freshman at Texas Christian University. I am double majoring in News-Editorial Journalism and Strategic Communications (AKA Advertising/Public Relations). I might minor in broadcast journalism but only if TCU brings back broadcast journalism with emphasis in sports broadcast. One day, I want to use all of that to eventually get a job with a MLB team or MLB. A girl can dream right?

Here at TCU, I am attempting to get involved and so far, I think I'm doing a good job. I have been initiated into the sisterhood of The Alpha Delta Pi sorority. I love it!! It is super fun and I love all of my sisters! I just recently had an interview for a positions on the TCU Diamond Darlings Squad. Diamond Darlings is the marketing team for the TCU baseball team. They might be the only other girls on campus that believe that the diamond that is a girl's best friend is actually made of grass, dirt and chalk. I should know by the weekend after Thanksgiving if I get a position on the squad. I will have a very excited post if I do! :)

Baseball wise, I played baseball/softball for at least seven years of my life. I never played any select ball just Little League and some Pony/Colt. My last two years I played for my high school. I enjoyed it immensely however, I decided to quit softball so I could focus on band. Neither my coaches or band directors were too interested me participating in both. Once I quit, I became a big fan of MLB. I think it was my way of retaining all of the memories I had from my past year plus, I had a big brother around that was always watching Rangers' baseball. My love for baseball grew each day and now I impress my own family with my knowledge and love for the sport.

I first saw Kameron Loe pitch one summer day while I was in Corpus Christi visiting my brother. Ironically, the game that I watched was the game that was considered to have reversed the Rangers' season. It was the Rangers versus the Pirates. Kameron Loe was starting and only because pitcher Brandon McCarthy recieved a blister on his finger. Before this Kameron Loe had been sent down to AAA and without even making an appearence with the RedHawks, he was back up with the Rangers to make the start. Kameron pitched an amazing Eight innings, fanning seven and only allowed five hits. He even a had a good day at the plate! In two at-bats he grounded out, walked and even got a hit. He eventually scored a run to help his own cause too! From that moment on, I fell in love with the big guy and became a steadfast fan!

Well, thats about it for now. I am happy to say that this post took almost my whole shift (four hours). Tomorrow I get to go home to Austin for Thanksgiving so that means my next few posts will be from Austin! Hopefully, those posts will be my firsts about Japanese baseball!

-Holly

P.S. Wish me luck on my statistics test tomorrow!

"Baseball games are like snowflakes and fingerprints, no two are ever alike."

-W. It should be quite clear by the second or third story that I didn't ever really have the best of luck...

At the beginning of my summer after my High School graduation I declared a summer goal: To get a picture with Kameron Loe. I had only received his autograph once before in California and it wasn't that great of an experience because he was quickly swarmed with card collectors. At the beginning of my summer, Kam Loe was pitching for AAA Oklahoma. In July, Oklahoma would be playing AAA Round Rock which is very close to my house. I marked that four-game series on every calendar I had, and began the long waiting process. When the first game finally arrived I was soooo freaking excited. I could not sit still any part of the day. So, Long story short, Kam Loe never came out of the locker room that game or any of those games for that matter. He got called up to the Rangers the day of the first game. My luck!

A few days after I moved up here to Fort Worth, Ranger Pitcher C.J. Wilson held one of his Guitar Hero Challenges. Kam Loe had once again gotten the call to the Big Leagues so I just took a guess that he would make an appearance at the GH Challenge. Somehow, I convinced my new roomie to travel with me to Dallas. So we drove to Dallas and we were thirty or so minutes late because we got lost. Big time lost too. We finally got there and we milled around for a while. I saw Kam Loe. I ran to the bathroom right quick before I initiated any sort of interaction. When I came out, he was gone. Yep...Good Luck Adventure Number two!

For my bestie's birthday, I bought her and I tickets to a Rangers game. This game was super special for her because he favorite player, pitcher Brandon McCarthy, was making his first start of the season after a long stint on the DL. What made the game ideal for me was that Kam Loe was still up with the Rangers; it was another opportunity to meet Kam Loe! My bestie and I stood out by the bullpen to wait for Bcar and Kam during the pregame. Bcar eventually showed up but Kam didn't. Basically, after the game was over, I found out that Kam got sent back down to AAA Oklahoma. However, the worst news was that AAA Oklahoma would be playing at AAA Round Rock and I couldn't go because the series was in the middle of the week. How terrible...

Yeah. I don't really think there is a need for any more explanation. I have the worst luck.

-Holly

"A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings."
-Earl Wilson

The Birth of a Blog...

Thursday, November 20th could possibly be one of the most surprising days of my life. I had entered my dorm room after getting out of stats class an hour early (Thank Goodness! I am not a Math person whatsoever...) and sat down at my computer. I did my daily sweep of websites and when I got to LoneStarBall.com (LSB) I read "Kam Loe to Japan". My heart sank. Kameron Loe was my favorite player and had been since the summer of 2007 and now, he was headed to Japan for at least one year. Almost immediately upon reading that line I began crying (embarrassing, but true) and even awoke my roommate from her mid-afternoon nap with a few choice words.

Although this move was not the best one for his followers, like me, it was obviously a good move for him. To my understanding he will get to be a starting pitcher, not a reliever. He will also got a nice little raise too! The more and more I thought about this, the more and more I realized what a great opportunity Japan actually was for Kam.

Friday night I sat in my dorm thinking. I couldn't just let my favorite player drift into the unknown world of Japanese baseball without some sort of following. By doing just a few searches of NPB (Japan's Professional League) I found out that most of the first-hand sources were in Japanese. I realized that keeping up with Kam would be quite difficult if there wasn't one controlled source in English reporting. I knew that there was a very little chance of anyone else picking up the idea of reporting on Kam's status in Japan so I quickly picked up the idea and started brainstorming.

That, my friends, is how "Keepin' up with Kam" was born. Now just to clarify, I don't intend to report on every game...just the ones he pitches in. Why? Because keeping up with one player in Japan is hard enough let alone reporting on every game. However, when summer roles around and College work takes a break, I may find myself posting a little more.

Here are some basic details:

-The Player: Kameron Loe

-The Position: RHP (Right Handed Pitcher)

-The Team: The SoftBank Hawks

-The City: Fukuoka, Japan

-The Stadium: The Fukuoka Yahoo! I plan on doing my next couple of posts on myself, which should involve a few funny baseball stories. After that, I will then attempt to go more in-depth with some of the topics listed above. I also want to do a post about some of the 'oddities' that I have already found in Japanese culture in Baseball. Hopefully, all of that will keep me busy until the season starts!

-Holly

"There's no crying in Baseball!"
-Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks)
- A League of Their Own
